With research showing that potato chips contribute hugely to weight gain in many countries and
— let’s face it — it being all too easy to finish an entire bag once you start in on one, it might be
time to find a potato chip alternative.
If it’s the crunchy, salty and satisfying that you crave, here are five options that are better for you
and tastier to boot (and, we promise, no kale chips)!
1. Whole Grain Chips
Made from brown, black and red rice and whole corn, whole grain chips are totally gluten and
cholesterol free. They’re popped, not fried, which means they’re better for both your heart and
those greasy potato chip fingers. Plus, they come in two yummy varieties — salt & pepper and
barbecue.
2. Zucchini Chips
Get an extra serving of veggies to fuel your day. Zucchini chips (both available at your store and
easy to make at home) are filled with awesome benefits — protein, fiber, Vitamin A — and less
than 30 calories for a cup. It’s guilt-free snacking at its finest.
3. Rice Crackers
Crunchy? Check. Crispy? You got it! Savory? Definitely. These rice crackers with sesame butter
are made with delicious Thai rice and sesame and sprinkled with both sugar and salt, for a can’t-
miss combination.
4. Veggie Straws
Veggie straws are a favorite with picky eaters and kids alike. Maybe it’s the cool shape, maybe
it’s the fun colors. Whatever the reason, they give you organic servings of tomatoes, potatoes,
carrots and spinach, sans the trans fat.
5. Cheese Crisps
If you’re avoiding potatoes because you’re on the Keto diet or just avoiding carbs altogether,
cheese crisps (you can buy them in the store or just make them at home, with cheese only — just
bake spoonfuls of shredded cheese on parchment paper, until they spread and start to caramelize,
and then allow them to cool and harden on a baking rack) could be your snacking saving grace.
